Margaret Thatcher vigorously defends the legacy of her government against a motion of no confidence in the House of Commons. It was also to be her last appearance before the House as prime minister, having decided against contesting the second ballot of the Conservative leadership contest.
During the speech she attacks the failed socialist policies of the past and Labour’s ‘disjointed, opaque words’, champions Britain’s renewed prestige on the world stage, its regenerated domestic economy and the role played by Britain in the fall of Communism. The government defeated the motion but Margaret Thatcher resigned as prime minister on 27 November.
